What is SMWC Idol?
SMWC Idol is an eight-round competition in which porters and composers create custom music for Super Mario World under various criterias and restrictions. Each round is open to the entire userbase, discounting judges. You do not need to participate in the first round to be able to join in later, and you can skip any round. This year, five judges will be rating each submission - they are andy_k_250, Atma, Dotsarecool, Kristian, and Ladida.
How do you win it?
Most rounds won, and highest point total. Don't make shit and you'll do well.
...and what is the scoring rubric?
  • Accuracy in the situation of a port will be how true it is to the original, e.g. are the instruments similar, is it the same tempo etc. 4 points.
  • Ingenuity in the situation of a composition regards the complexity and flow of a song. Does it push SMW to its limits? 4 points.
  • Quality will be how good the music sounds on its own. Is it construction in such a fashion that it seems like it could really come from a game? 5 points.
  • Functionality would be ingame, does it cause any glitches like overflowing the echo buffer? 1 point.
What if I suck at porting?
Try anyways if you want. Some people who feel they are inexperienced at porting are giving it a go and faring well, as seen in round 1's stats.
